Tyler Geiman hit a shot from just beyond mid-court as the final seconds ticked off the clock to lift Washburn to a 69-68 win over Northwest in the MIAA Tournament Championship.
The Bearcats (23-2) took the lead with 2.7 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws from Diego Bernard. In need of a desperation heave, the Ichabods (19-6) gave the ball to Geiman, he took two dribbles, then launched the game winner.
The loss is just the second of the season for Northwest, both coming to Washburn. The first meeting in Maryville went to the 'Bods 86-84 in overtime. The second went to the Bearcats 88-85 in overtime from Topeka, KS.
Northwest trailed 30-19 at halftime after shooting only 21-percent in the opening 20 minutes. The Bearcats battled back with 49 second half-points and a chance to win the game.
Ryan Hawkins led Northwest with 23 points after going 14-18 from the free throw line. The senior also had 10 rebounds and seven steals.
Trevor Hudgins added 18 points.
Bernard scored 10 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Northwest is the number two seed in the NCAA Central Region. The Bearcats will face the winner between No. 3 Washburn and No. 6 Missouri Western Sunday at 7:45pm.
